Is a Tummy Tuck Right for Me?

Enhancing the cosmetic appearance of the abdomen with a tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck is an exciting solution for those who have felt uncomfortable in, or out, of their clothing. As we begin to age, the skin around the abdomen begins to loosen due particularly to child bearing, weight loss/ gain, and aging. While pregnancy is a wonderful and exciting experience, it can often leave the abdominal muscles stretched out beyond the scope of what regular exercise can cure. The degree to which sagging occurs can be exemplified after multiple children. Fortunately, plastic surgery now offers the opportunity to get rid of unwanted fat, tighten lax abdominal skin, remove stretch marks and regain tone in the abdominal muscles via a tummy tuck.

What does a Tummy Tuck Involve?

There are several surgical options available to improve the appearance of the abdominal wall, so a careful assessment of the anatomy is essential to know which form of abdominal surgery will be most effective at achieving the desired results. It is also essential to be evaluated by a surgeon that is skilled in all options so as not to limit the scope of possibilities.

In instances when one has lower abdominal fullness due to excess fat and abdominal muscle laxity limited to below the belly-button, a “mini-abdominoplasty” may be most appropriate. This technique involves removal of a smaller amount of excess skin than with the full abdominoplasty, but also allows for tightening the abdominal muscles below the belly-button, and liposuctioning excess abdominal fat. During your consultation, Dr. Zimmerman will review each technique along with the specifics of your anatomy, so the optimal result can be obtained from your abdominoplasty.

What Is The Recovery Period After a Tummy Tuck?

Patients require a minimum of 2 weeks off from work. Exercise and weight lifting more than 10 pounds is strictly prohibited for the first 6 weeks which allows time for the abdominal muscles to fully heal. Dr Zimmerman will advise you when it is safe to return to full physical activity during your follow up appointments. Swelling is a natural part of the recovery process and may cause you to temporarily go up a dress size while the body fully heals.
