Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal works by directing heat energy toward the hair follicles that are designated for treatment. The follicles absorb the laser energy and are destroyed, so they no longer produce hair. Both men and women can benefit from laser hair removal. It’s effective on almost all skin types, and it’s nearly pain free.

What areas can be treated with laser hair removal?

At The Zimmerman Center for Plastic Surgery, you can take advantage of the revolutionary Apogee+™ Alexandrite laser by Cynosure® and Nd:Yag lasers for hair removal in small areas. The Diolaze® laser by InMode works to remove hair from larger areas.

Just about anywhere you have unwanted hair can be effectively treated with laser energy. This includes the:

  • Back and chest
  • Bikini line
  • Chin and upper lip
  • Underarms
  • Legs and arms

Dr. Zimmerman evaluates your hair growth patterns, skin type, and hair density to determine which laser treatment is best for you.

How many laser treatments are necessary to effectively eliminate unwanted hair?

Hair grows in cycles. A laser hair removal session works only on hair in the growth phase. So, you need multiple sessions to effectively destroy hair follicles in a given section. Most people benefit from between three and five total sessions, spaced six to eight weeks apart. Dr. Zimmerman creates a customized plan for you that’s based on your aesthetic goals.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal results in at least an 80% decrease in hair growth in fully treated areas. Dr. Zimmerman cannot guarantee permanent hair removal because some hair may be dormant. But you do achieve notably smoother skin.

Why is laser hair removal preferable to other methods?

Laser hair removal is relatively quick, as the lasers can cover large areas of treatment in a short time. Plus, the results are precise and predictable. You also have very little maintenance once your series of sessions are complete. You don’t have to pluck, wax, or shave those problem areas.
