Botox Q & A

What are Botox and Dysport?

Botox and Dysport are injectable wrinkle reducers that use a purified form of the botulinum toxin to interfere with the way nerves communicate with your muscles. When injected with Botox or Dysport, your muscles cannot contract, meaning they can’t etch wrinkles and lines into your skin.

The difference between the injectables lies in the potency of trace proteins. For some people and treatment areas, one injectable may be more effective than another. Dr. Zimmerman evaluates your skin type and desired treatment areas to determine which one is best for you.

What areas can be treated with Botox and Dysport?

Dr. Zimmerman offers wrinkle reduction for a number of areas on your face. These include:

  • Horizontal lines on the forehead
  • Vertical frown lines between your eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet at the sides of the eyes
  • Wrinkles alongside your nose (bunny lines)
  • Wrinkles on your upper lip
  • Vertical cords on the neck

Botox is effective in treating some specific medical conditions as well, including migraines, chronic muscular pain, excessive sweating, and abnormal facial movements.

How soon will I see results from Botox or Dysport, and how long do they last?

Results from the injectable wrinkle reducers usually appear within two to three days. Botox and Dysport offer temporary wrinkle reduction for three to four months. To maintain your look, Dr. Zimmerman can retreat areas regularly.

Do Botox and Dysport injections hurt?

The injections do require the use of a needle, so you feel a pinch during their administration. The exact number of injections depends on which areas and how many areas you have treated. Most people tolerate the procedure quite well. If you’re concerned about sensation, however, talk to Dr. Zimmerman about using ice or a topical numbing cream prior to treatment.

What downtime is required with Botox and Dysport treatment?

You don’t need any downtime following wrinkle-reducing injections. You can even schedule the procedure during your lunch break and go right back to work afterward. Some people experience mild bruising, redness, or swelling at injection sites, but these side effects fade within a few days and can easily be masked with makeup.
