An alternative to the pre-packaged fillers is the use of one’s own fat to fill the creases and hollows we develop with age. Fat Transfer, as it is called, involves harvesting one’s own fat from an area where there is excess and carefully transferring those fat cells to areas in need. For transferred cells to survive they must develop a blood supply. We know not all of the transferred cells survive, but those that do, persist long term as living tissue. Improvements in understanding and technique have brought increased success to fat grafting. While it is more invasive than other filler techniques, it is a useful tool in the quest for a more youthful appearance.
