What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of the breasts by increasing cup size. This procedure may be combined with a lift to increase the height and perkiness of the breast and may enhance the results of your augmentation. There are many reasons to consider an augmentation. At the Zimmerman Center we are committed to educating our patients and helping them make informed decisions on the implant type, size, and shape that works best for them.
Selecting the right cup size is an important decision and should be made with the help of a certified plastic surgeon. During a private consultation, Dr. Zimmerman will help you decide which options best compliment your build and physique to produce the most natural appearance and ensures you achieve your surgical goals. Dr. Zimmerman’s vast experience with this procedure gives him the skills and knowledge to achieve a beautiful and proportionate result.
Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Anyone can be a candidate for breast augmentation surgery if they desire larger, perkier breasts. Generally women with underdeveloped breasts, or have one breast larger than the other will elect for augmentation surgery as it will help to achieve a fuller more proportionate and symmetrical appearance. In addition, women who have lost the shape and fullness of the breast from age or child bearing, and want to restore the fullness and firmness that they once had will opt for augmentation as well.
What Should I Know About Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure which requires the use of intravenous sedation where the patient is asleep and comfortable throughout. The surgery itself is very straightforward and safe when performed by a trained, licensed plastic surgeon. Dr. Zimmerman has over 26 years of experience and has performed over 8,000 breast augmentation cases.
The surgical approach is decided according to patient preference and Dr Zimmerman’s recommendation of the optimal location to hide the scar depending on the patients’ anatomy. Insertion of the implant can be achieved either through the crease beneath the breast, or around the border of the areola, or through the apex of the armpit. Dr. Zimmerman performs breast augmentation through a small 3 cm. incision for saline implants and a 3.5-4cm incision for silicone implants to ensure the smallest scar possible. During the initial consultation, you will discuss the location of implant insertion, with the majority being placed beneath the pectoralis muscle. The submuscular position is usually favored in order to give the most natural appearance and feel to the breast, while providing maximum protection against potential hardening of the breast (capsular contracture).
The surgery has a relatively quick recovery period for most patients, those with desk jobs can usually return to work in about a week. A break from physical activity is required, although the majority of patients can return to aerobic activity within 4 weeks of surgery, with the exception of workouts involving the chest. A specialized bra will need to be worn for a period following surgery to give the pectoral muscles a chance to heal around the new implants.
