Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Gynecomastia is defined as breast development in the male. While it is not unusual for younger men in their adolescence to have some development of breast tissue, this usually resolves by fifteen or sixteen years of age. Some men have persistence of a breast mound, or develop it later in life. It is important to rule out hormonal abnormalities as a cause for later breast development. Other common causes include the use of steroids (as frequently practiced by weight lifters and some athletes), and marijuana use.

There are two basic treatments for the reduction of gynecomastia. The breast mound can be excised using an incision along the border of the areola (pigmented tissue around the nipple). Or the breast tissue can be removed with liposuction if there is a high fat content to the gynecomastia. .

Following removal of the breast tissue, a compressive vest is usually worn for three weeks to help the overlying skin contract and conform to the underlying muscle. Recurrence of the breast tissue is extremely rare following treatment.
