Brachioplasty,
or arm lift surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce or eliminate
the extra "waddle" of skin and fat that can hang from
the underside of ones arms as we get older. It frequently develops
in someone whom has lost a large quantity of weight, and has stretched
out the skin in this area; or in individuals who still are carrying
a few extra pounds. If the skin tone is still intact, then one could
consider having liposuction of this area. Otherwise the brachioplasty
is designed to remove both the unwanted fat and excess stretched
out skin in this area. Unfortunately, the brachioplasty procedure
does leave a fairly lengthy scar on the underside of the arm from
above the elbow up into the armpit. But, with time these scars do
heal nicely, and are generally well accepted in place of the large
excess hanging skin. This surgery is performed as an outpatient,
with bandaging and restricted use of the arms for a few days. As
with all scars, one must allow nine to twelve months for the scar
to fully fade.
